The name origintates from the 11th Century Bishop of Hereford Walter-de-Merton, whose ancestors arrived with William the Conqueror From Brittany. Until the 1850's the building was the residence of Herefords County Prison Governor. The shops across the road were, in fact, the stables, but of the original prison itself only the now Bus Station Booking Office remains. In 1982 an old Australian gentleman visited the Merton, his first place of employment. At ten years old his first task every morning was to run to the Saracens Head and return with a quart of gin for cook who refused to rise from her bed before its arrival. At that time only few Inns were permitted to sell spirits. Ale was 2d a pint. Undoubtedly a lady of outstanding worth to the Proprietor. Your hosts today, Fenella Powell and Nick Brown have retained much of English History in their own specialised Tradional English cooking and sincerely look forward to seeing you at the Merton.
