Gloucester Old Spots are
spot on!
That is the opinion
of Heggies of Hereford's customers who tried their first batch of real
Gloucester Old Spot meat and can't wait to get more.
Kate Gilbert, spent years 'on the other side of farming', as a chef so
when she married Jonathan and moved to his home, Forty Farm at Madley,
near Hereford, she knew what she wanted to do: "Supply top quality
real meat from free range animals, with a good quality of life."
and this became her quest, together with ensuring that Forty Farm stayed
farming under the Gilberts'.
Kate grew up living next door to George Styles, the man who rescued the
Gloucester Old Spot breed from disappearing in the Fifties, and so this
rare breed was 'imprinted' on her as the best to have - the traditional
Orchard breeds would suit her farm - quiet, inquisitive pigs that cannot
be hurried to the pork stage, taking 22 weeks on a free range system as
opposed to the 14 weeks achieved by modern hybrids indoors, but the meat
would have terrific flavour in the process.
